The role of teachers in society

Is teaching a calling?

Is it a profession?

Is it an escape route?

In our latest News of 12 November 2010, we mention the support that the South African Department of Basic Education has given to grade 12 learners in 2010. We particularly mention the fact that teachers played a great role in ensuring or at least in facilitating the success.

Note however, that we are asserting teachers separately as if they are separate from government. To a large extent they probably are, because the default expectation from government, particularly around the Western Cape is that teachers have to heed their demand, for example, that they had to be at schools on weekends "when duty calls". The Telematics experience is a case in point. In our view, they were literally bullied into being at school, supervising learners that listens to TV screens for those three hours in which another teacher goes through the chores with them.

Our Question to you:

Why is it by default expected that teachers should take work home, while not getting the same numeration as counterparts in other professions?

Are we wrong in making this assertion?

MATHSLINK does not have the capacity, currently, to engage in a coordinated debate or blog on some of these issues. We nevertheless invite comments and will try our level best to grow an audience wherein these age-old musings are asserted.
